ANSWERS:
Q.01: What is a Domain Name Server (DNS) and how does it work?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a distributed Internet directory service. DNS is used mostly to translate between domain names and IP addresses, and to control email delivery. Most internet services rely on DNS to work. If DNS fails or is too slow, web sites cannot be located and email delivery stalls. The DNS system consists of three components: DNS data (called resource records), servers (called name servers), and Internet protocols for fetching data from the servers.

Q.09: Why do I need a domain name?

When you choose a web address or a domain name for your business you actually put up your business online and make your business accessible to millions of customers all over the world.

Your customers use your domain name (www.yourdomain.com) to find your business online, order your products or services or contact you, which means more business. And you send and receive messages from the email business solutions package linked to your domain name.

If you just recently signed up with Rediff Business solutions for your Domain, it may still not be active across the Internet or if you are using a domain name registered elsewhere then changes to your name server settings may not yet have taken effect. After registration, a new domain takes 24 to 48 hours to get activated.
Q.10: How do I terminate my account?

If you ever wish to terminate your account, which we are sure you wouldn’t want to, all you need to do is refrain from renewing your account for that particular product or service. Your account lapses automatically.

Q.15: What if I already have a Domain Name?

If you have booked your domain name through a different registrar, you can still use our other services like Business mail and Web hosting. You need to contact your domain registrar and request a name server change to redirect your existing domain name to a new service on Rediff Business Solutions. You will get a detailed instruction from us after you place the order.
Q.16: What is Domain Forwarding (CNAME) and how do I forward my domain?

Domain forwarding service is a free service at Rediff Business Solutions. The domain forward feature lets you point your domain name to another home page or web site location and keep track of all your customers. This is used when you have registered a number of similar domain names but you want to have the same website for all domain names. Let's say your main site/domain name is MYSITE.COM. Your strategy may also be to register the names:

YSITES.COM

Y-SITE.COM

Y-SITES.COM

and have all these names go to your MYSITE.COM website. This theory assumes that your MAIN domain name might not be remembered correctly so you might as well get hits for all the domain names.

When using domain name forwarding, the address of the site that your domain name is forwarded to is NOT shown. For instance, if you have the domain name MYNEWSITE.COM forwarded to MYSITE.COM, the web browser will NOT show references to MYSITE.COM.

To forward your domain

Login to your Rediff Business Solutions account from the Rediff Business Solutions home page. Once you’ve signed in you will be taken to your Account(s) Summary page

Click on ‘manage your domain’

Click on ‘edit’ under Domain forwarding (C Name Records)

Click on ‘Add Record’ key in the aliases and the host server information and click on Save changes

Key in the modified information and click on ‘Save changes’

Your edited domain forward record will appear listed along with the details. Keep in mind that it may take up to one hour for your new domain forwarding to take effect during which visitors will see the original domain forward and not the edited domain forward.
Q.18: How do I delete domain forwarding?

back to questions
Q.19: Why is my domain forwarding not working?

When you access your domain name, hold down the "Shift" key while clicking the "Refresh" or "Reload" button on your browser. This will ensure that you are seeing the most recent version of your web page and not a browser-cached version.

If this still doesn't work, it may be a natural delay. The propagation of updates to standard and masked forwarding may take up to 30 minutes. It may take longer, up to 24 hours, if you are changing from or forwarding to a Rediff hosted web site.

If you moved your domain name from another domain name host to the Rediff service, please verify that your domain name has been successfully moved to the Rediff name servers. Any settings, including domain forwarding, will not be active until the re-delegation process is complete.
Q.20: What are DNS records?

The DNS (Domain Name System) records control the functionality of domain names. Each registered domain name has a DNS record. The DNS record is made of sub records including MX, A, and CNAME.

Please try the following web sites for more information on DNS:

Q.23: How do I change the name servers for my domain name?

Replacing Rediff's Name Servers with others could render many of your services inactive. Changing your Name Servers will not automatically cancel your service. You will continue to manage your WHOIS contact information through Rediff and Rediff will continue to renew your annual domain registration.

If you would like to proceed with the change, you can click on ‘manage domain’ on the Account(s) Summary page for the domain name whose name server information you wish to modify.

To change Name Servers:

While your changes will appear in your Name Servers within minutes, please be aware that it can take 24-48 hours for changes to records to be propagated to all Name Servers throughout the Internet.

If you would like to restore your Name Servers to their default setting, you can Click on ‘edit’ below Name Server Mapping on ‘Manage Your Domain’ page.

Delete the nameserver hostnames of your new domain name host you keyed in The system will automatically take in the default Rediff nameserver hostnames.

Q.24: What is Domain assigning (A record)?

All servers on the Internet have an IP address that consists of a set of four numbers like 123.45.6.78 By assigning a name to the IP address – or vice versa - the web becomes easier to use. URL addresses (domain names) are obtainable from many sources. A domain name can have more than one IP address.

For example:

YSITE.COM is assigned IP address 124.32.9.76 or

SALES.MYSITE.COM is assigned IP address 124.32.9.76 and 124.32.9.77

Sign in to your Rediff Business Solutions account. Once signed in you will see modules for each of your domain names.

From the My Account(s) Summary page, click on ‘Manage domain’ for the domain whose A records you wish to modify.

Click on edit below Domain Assigning on the ‘Manage your domain’ page.

Note: We allow you to create multiple A records for the same hostname. Sometimes this is used for a strategy commonly referred to as round robin. If you don't wish to create round robin A records, delete the records you don't want.
back to questions
Q.26: Can I set up multiple A and CNAME records?

Yes. You can set up multiple A and CNAME records, one record at a time. We also allow you to create multiple A records for the same hostname. Sometimes this is used for a strategy commonly referred to as round robin. If you don't wish to create round robin A records, delete the records you don't want.

Please be sure that when creating an A record or creating CNAME records, you are pointing to legitimate destinations.
Q.27: Why isn't my A record working?

When creating a custom A record you will need to make sure that you are pointing your hostname to a legitimate IP address. If your custom A record is pointing to a destination that is not ready, it will result in a "page cannot be displayed" error.

One simple test to confirm that the IP address is correct is to enter the IP address directly into the web address bar to confirm that it resolves to the expected destination.
back to questions
Q.28: What is an MX record?

X or Mail Exchanger record specifies where mail for a domain name should be delivered. The record must be an assigned domain name, which in turn points to an IP address. MX record can have more than one domain name and the order is decided by the preferences. For example:

X record for the domain MYSITES.COM points to MAIL.MYSITES.COM with preferences 10 (default value) and MAIL.MYWIDGETS.COM points to the IP address 203.199.83.202

If you decide to create an MX record for your domain name zone files, the email services provided in your the plan you purchased will no longer function. All email addressed with your domain name will be handled by the server you indicate in the MX record.
Q.29: How do I set an MX record?

Note: If you overwrite Rediff's default MX records or decide to create additional MX record for your domain name zone files with a higher priority, the email services provided in the plan you purchased will no longer function.
